The initiative is organized by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) as part of its global program aimed at recognizing outstanding rural tourism destinations
Often referred to as the “Masuleh of Khorasan” for its distinctive stepped architecture, Roein is renowned for its traditional mud-brick houses nestled along the mountainside, its lush orchards, and its rich cultural heritage. The village is also well known for preserving traditional handicrafts—particularly handwoven textiles—which continue to play an important role in the local economy
According to regional tourism authorities, Roein meets the key criteria established by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) program, including sustainable tourism development, preservation of cultural and natural heritage, community participation, and balanced socio-economic growth. Local officials emphasize that the nomination process involves a comprehensive evaluation of environmental sustainability practices, infrastructure readiness, and the preservation of cultural authenticity.
If officially registered by 2027, Roein is expected to gain greater international visibility, attract responsible tourism, and enhance economic opportunities for its residents while preserving its traditional identity and environmental integrity

The World Register of Tourism Villages aims to promote rural destinations that serve as models of sustainable tourism development and community-based growth, highlighting villages that successfully balance tourism expansion with heritage conservation
